Abstract
In recent years, the presence of cstrogen receptor(ER) has been demonstrated in some cases of cancer in the digestive organs such as stomach, large intestine, Panceras, and liver, which are non-target organs of sex hormones. In this study,
alcohol-fixed, paraffin embedded specimens of 69 patients with human gastric cancers, which were operated in Gyeogsang National University Hospital from October. 1990 to May, 1993, were immunohistochemically stained with anti-ER-related
protein(ERD5)
monoclonal antibody, and the medical records of the 69 patients were reviewed. In the 45 patients who were in schedule follow up. Survival rate according to whether the ERD5 is present or not was evaluated. Correlations between ERD5 positive rate
and
pathologic classification of gastic cancer and between ERD5 and serum CEA levels were analized with Student's t-test and Chi-square test. estrogen receptors were positive in 24(57.1%) of the 42 male patients and 18(66.7%) of the 27 female
patients.
There was no significant difference between ERD5 positive rate and sex distribution. In patient of age over 60, ERD5 positive rate was high(65.8%), but it was not significant statistically. There was no significant difference between the ERD5
positive
rate and WHO pathologic classification. In Lauren's classification, intestinal type of gastric cancer had higher positive rate(69.4%) than diffuse type(51.5%). In Ming's classificaton, expanding type of gastric cance had higher positive
rate(81.8%)
than
infiltrative type. Statistically significant difference was found between expanding type and infiltrative type(P<0.05). there was no significant differences between the ERD5 positive rate and the TNM staging or the degree of differentation of
cancer
cells. There was no significant difference between the ERD5 positive rate and serum CEA level. In ERD5 positive group, 3 years survival rates according to EGC and each stages of AGC were evaluated. In ERD5 negative group, survival rates according
to EGC
and each stages of AGC were evaluated. In conclusion, ERD5 positive rate was significantly high in the patient with expanding type of gastric cancer in Ming's classification and intestinal type of gastric cancer in Lauren's classificantion. But,
there
was no significant difference in survival rates between ERD5 positive group and ERD5 negative group.
